What to Know About Writing Projects
As with design and editing work, writing is particular. The image and style of a particular project or company may require a blend of writing styles and the client's careful review of a writer's existing work to be certain the writer is a good match for the material.
That's not to say writers can't adapt. Even humor writers can produce serious pieces; however, a little research can result in a natural partnership. I tend to select work carefully based on my writing style. I want a good experience for the client—and for myself.
Getting Up to Speed
When you hire a new employee, there is an absorption period. A company provides background information, some basic historical perspective, their style preferences and peeves, perhaps a list of acronyms. Writers will generally account for the getting-up-to-speed time in their project estimate. The good news is that return customers can expect this lead time to diminish with each project; there is simply less to learn.
Expertise
The company provides the content expertise. A content expert can be one or more people among your contacts or staff who have the experience and information from which the basic text is drafted. A writer's access to the content expert(s) is critical to a project's success.
The writer is the process expert. I'll use the content you provide, which may include data, notes, writing produced by others or even memories, to bring together a cohesive, finished product.
Approvers and Edits
The clearest and most efficient route to great working relationship is when the writer works directly with the person who has the final stamp of approval for a project. Questions and roadblocks are quickly cleared by this method. Edits are generally two fold once the writer supplies a complete first draft to the approver:
- The approver responds with changes to be made.
- The writer supplies the corrected copy to the approver.
Customer Satisfaction
I am committed to producing work that meets, often exceeds, the client's expectations. I use project management experience to define the scope of every project and balance the client's desired timelines with those of other clients. If when I review the proposed project I don't feel I will be able to meet your deadline, I can recommend other writers who may be able to accept your project.
